Why Food Allergies Can Be Extremely Dangerous And Troublesome

Food allergies are becoming increasingly common throughout the Western world, with certain types of food showing worryingly high incidence rates of allergic reactions. The main culprits are animal and soya milk, wheat, eggs, and nuts. Some of the reactions to these foods are violent in the extreme, and reactions to nuts in particular have resulted in the death of the patient. There are very few techniques available to treat these allergies, beyond the obvious advice to avoid the food which causes the problem to erupt. Research is continuing, and there are new techniques which offer hope for the future.

While it is possible to develop a food allergy to just about any type of nutrition taken into the body, including fruit, there are some foods which are commonly known culprits in this type of condition. Peanuts are one of the most talked about common allergy foods, because the reactions to this food can be among the most extreme. Tree nuts are also a common allergy food. Most of the other common allergy foods are of animal origin, such as milk and eggs. Fish and shellfish are also among the highest ranking allergy foods, and reactions to them can be extreme.

One of the most frustrating aspects of all concerning these allergies is that there is no obvious way to treat the condition. Staying away from the food which causes the problem is the first obvious step, but even that is far easier said than done. Small quantities of a food product which causes an allergic reaction can be found even when there is no expectation that it will be there, and those small quantities can be enough to trigger an extreme reaction.

The main treatments for allergies are hormones which are naturally produced by the human body, such as adrenaline. This is the hormone which is naturally produced during the fight or flight mechanism which the human organism uses for survival. Antihistamines are also commonly used to block the histamine which causes the dilation of blood vessels, although it is important to realize that this has limited effect against the breathing difficulties caused by anaphylaxis. The future offers hope of more comprehensive treatments, and there is even hope that a vaccine can be developed which will solve many of these problems.

There is no reason why someone with a food allergy cannot live a normal life, and the fact that society is now so much more aware of these conditions is helping a lot. Good food labeling can do so much to ease the suffering which allergies can cause, because there are always alternatives to any type of food. Specialist cookbooks are always available to help you replace the allergy substance with something which will taste very similar, and have the same qualities in a recipe, but which will be totally safe for the allergy sufferer to use.

The typical allergy sufferer will be able to live a normal life so long as they avoid the substance which causes the problem. This should be easy enough to achieve at home, as most food is properly labeled. The time when a sufferer is in most danger is when they are forced to eat out in restaurants or cafes. Many will simply not do this, and will always take their own food wherever they go. The primary consideration is always to avoid the onset of an attack, but it is possible to try to treat a food allergy. Hormone treatments are common, and there are also treatments within alternative medicine which can help.

The future of food allergies is uncertain. As of now there has been little progress made by the conventional medicine system, and avoidance of the allergen is typically the only advice which can be given. Systems of alternative medicine, which deal with an energy field believed to course through the body, present new hope because they are dealing with a different factor. The existence of this field is not accepted by everyone, certainly not by medical science, but there are many who claim success from alternative therapies. There are those within conventional medicine who believe that vaccines are the most likely solution to the problem of food allergies.

The first step you need to take if you suspect that either yourself or a family member is subject to food allergies is to find out all you can about the possible allergy. The Internet is your best source of information, but be sure you are reading a reputable site produced by established medical professionals. If it is a child which you are concerned about, be ever watchful for signs of unusual eating, breathing or eliminatory patterns.
