Why Food Allergies Symptoms Can Help The Diagnostic Process

Food allergies symptoms can be many and varied, depending on the substance which is causing the allergic reaction, and how it is affecting the body. The basic mechanism of a food allergy happens because the body, specifically the immune system, thinks that a protein contained with a certain food is something which it needs to get rid of. It therefore creates a reaction in the body to make sure the substance is eliminated. Many of these reactions affect the skin, and it is there that symptoms are most noticeable. There are many other possible symptoms, though, either instead of as well as the skin problems.

The skin can easily break out into a rash, and this is the most common of all symptoms food allergies can cause. If anything, this is a positive sign, as it is a relatively mild reaction. When this happens, you can perform tests by removing foods from the diet one by one in order to try to isolate the cause of the problem. Having blood tests carried out can provide useful clues, as it can be shown which substances the body has produced in its mistaken attempt to eliminate a substance it believes is harmful. These substances can help the practitioner make an accurate diagnosis.

The milder the food allergy symptoms are, the easier the diagnostic tests will be to carry out. When there is a serious reaction to food which has not yet been identified, it becomes far more difficult to use this type of test. In this case, a blood test should definitely be carried out, as an extreme reaction is likely to mean that there will be a lot of extra substances created by the body to try to fight what it believes is an intruder. These clues need to be acted upon, to try to increase the likelihood of the test giving an accurate result.

Hives on the body are also extremely common symptoms of food allergy, and they can last for a long time and be difficult to treat. They are very similar in appearance to insect bites, even though the causes are completely different. If hives suddenly appear on the body, you can begin testing for a possible food allergy, but it is as well to be aware that there are other possible causes of the condition. Infections, and reaction to clothing which is worn on the body could also be responsible for the hives on the skin.

The symptoms of food allergies can often alert you to situations which may be serious. It is breathing difficulties which causes the greatest problem when people have food allergies. If you see someone having difficulty breathing, and you know they are a food allergy sufferer, get medical attention immediately. Other symptoms such as rashes can alert you to the fact that food which is being eaten may be improperly labeled, so there may be a reason to get in touch with a food manufacturer and ask questions, if you can identify the food which is causing the reaction.

The symptoms you observe can also help to point the way to the right way to treat a food allergy, although it does have to be pointed out that there are few treatments for allergies sanctioned by the medical profession. The use of hormones is common, and many of these hormones are the same as those produced naturally by the body when it is in defensive fight or flight mode. The hormone adrenaline can be useful in the short term treatment of food allergies.

The most controversial treatments of all are those which do not need an analysis of the food allergies symptoms, because they deal with the energy field which is believed to run through the human body, and through all living things. Medical science is skeptical as to the existence of this energy field, but there is a huge swell of interest in alternative and energy medicine throughout the Western world. There is no doubt that more research and scientific tests are needed, but until there is a more open-minded approach, and at least the acknowledgment that the field might exist, this is unlikely to happen.

The first obvious reaction to seeing food allergies symptoms is to try to guess the food responsible and cut it out of your diet. This may not be the best way to proceed, and it is certainly not something you should do without consulting a medical practitioner. If you cut out a food which is not responsible for the reaction, you could just be confusing yourself and making the problem worse. The practitioner will try to use the symptoms of food allergies to carry out extensive tests, to try to ascertain the causes for the food allergies symptoms.
