How Baby Food Allergies Can Be Reduced And Managed

Baby food allergies are becoming more of a problem than ever, both with the baby formula itself, and with other food which the child starts to eat when it comes off the formula. There are many ingredients which can be the subject of an allergy, but there are some which are becoming seriously problematic. Most allergic reactions are caused by the protein element in food, as it is this that the body identifies, albeit incorrectly, as a threat. It doesn't matter whether this protein comes from an animal or a plant based source, and some of the worst reactions come from nut based proteins.

The formula on which babies are typically fed can be a source of problems. It is always recommended that you see a physician at the first sign of a rash or other allergy symptoms, so that the formula the baby is eating can be assessed for the likelihood of it causing an allergic reaction. It is vital not to jump to conclusions, as there are other factors which can cause a rash, such as artificial fabrics worn next to the skin. If the formula is considered likely to be the cause of the baby food allergy, it will be exchanged for a slightly different one.

It is not only the formula which can cause difficulties. If a baby is breast fed for six months after birth, it will grow up with a greatly reduced chance of developing allergy symptoms. Many babies are never fed naturally, and this puts them at greater risk. The types of allergy which afflict children at this stage tend to be similar to those which afflict adults, with protein foods again the major culprit. The good news is that allergies which are contracted very young tend not to last into adulthood.

Noticing that the baby is suffering an allergic reaction can be problematic in itself unless you know what to look out for. If you notice any sign of digestive problems, get to a physician straight away and have the condition looked at. There is no reason to delay and assume the problem will put itself right, because if it is an allergy it may well not do so. The sooner you get an accurate diagnosis, the better.

The dangers inherent in baby food allergies vary depending on the allergy which is encountered. If the baby food product contains nuts, and there is a nut allergy which has not yet been diagnosed, the consequences could be extremely serious. If your baby begins to how signs of breathing problems, there is nothing to do but to call out emergency medical services as quickly as possible. Most of the reactions to baby food are less extreme, but if you suspect your baby is allergic to something get medical help straight away. If you don't, the problem could recur even if it was not that serious.

The treatments which can be given for a baby food allergy are relatively few. If there is a breathing difficulty, immediate medical help will be needed to counter this. For allergies which just affect the sin, there are ointments and creams which can help to neutralize the acidity of the rash. These ointments and creams are limited in what they can do, and they will only work to any extent if you are able to find out what the allergen is and stop more of it being taken into the body. Drug treatments can really only reduce the pain of a rash rather than do anything to cure it, and there are limits as to how much of a drug a baby should be given.

In the future, it is to be hoped that there will be comprehensive routine testing which can tell at the outset whether a baby has a serious food allergy, without the need for finding out accidentally. If such a testing system could be designed, it would give parents far greater peace of mind when they are choosing the right baby formula. It is also hoped that in the future there will be ways to actually combat food allergies. The most likely of these ways is with a vaccine, although it is not known at what age this could be safely given to a child.

Finding out that your children have baby food allergies is never easy to deal with, and there is one way which has helped thousands of parents to cope. This is the joining of a support group, either online or physically within your own city. If you have no easy access to a group because you live in a rural area, you can join an online forum to get the advice and support you need. You may end up taking an active part in raising the awareness of baby food allergies.
